Teenage Suicide !!

I have a friend that  a friend of the family suffered the tradgedy of a 15 year old  boy commit suicide last week.As this is the age of my own son I took it to heart even more than just a sorrowful feeling for the family,my friend and most of all the child. As I spoke in other posts many children live in fear and have nowhere they feel comfortable turning to for help.I asked myself the question what could have been so bad in his life that he would see this as his only way out? What was he going through? As I thought of it I wondered how many others might go through this, so I did some research.I was shocked to find that for every teen suicide, 25 more teens have yet attempted suicide. You have many factors,Depression,Drugs, and Abuse mainly.Suicide is the 3rd LEADING cause of death to teens. This is huge in my eye. What do we do to prevent things like this? We are not there to know what our children or any child is subjected to on a constant basis. So what are the signs to look for?I am sure this is something the family didn't know was going to happen or they would have done all they could to make things better.Showing Love,  not  control is the first thing I say.You can have a good child and not control them and belittle them or hurt them emotionally or physically. As I continue to stress, let your child know they can talk to you about anything.Being a friend does not stop your status as a parent or a grown up children can talk to.In my research some of the signs to look for,[Disinterest in favorite activities, substance abuse, behavioral problems, withdrawing from family and friends, change in eating habits, neglecting hygiene and personal appearance, complains frequently of boredom, decline in grades, hard time concentrating.]These are some of the things to look for.Don't take for granted your child is not a candidate to have this problem, don't let it happen and then say I should have done this and that, after it happens. These are cries for help,it is our responsibility to help not just our own but all those in need of help.Question: Who will help those that can't help themselves ?

  1. Last year, a classmate at my daughter's middle school committed suicide. They did not know each other, but I asked my daughter how did she feel about it. Her response was that he must not have had anyone to talk to about his problems. I asked does she ever feel that way -- ever feel like she cannot talk to us. Her response, sometimes. I was kind of surprised though she never seems to have a sad moment. I told her no matter what, please feel free to come to your parents. There may be times when we may not be happy with what you have to say, but at least give us a chance to give you a response and provide you guidance.
